For our September 87Food Lunch Club, we headed to Ma Baker in Westby near Blackpool.
Using fresh local produce, Ma Baker offers a full range menu, from the All day breakfast, A choice of ‘World Famous’ soups, together with lunchtime specials and the daytime menu. You can also pop in for delicious home-made cakes and scones (with jam and cream), with a pot of English tea and a wide range of coffees.
Following a very busy morning in the office and with a few of the team having never visited Ma Baker before, we couldn’t wait for this one…
I love a Full English and am always on the lookout for a good fry up, but the area is particularly bad for them. If I’m honest, Blackpool’s food culture is poor in general. That’s why finding places like Ma Bakers is refreshing for a Fylde Coast foodie.
The breakfast from Ma Bakers is a solid 8/10 in my eyes. They use quality ingredients – such as the homemade black pudding, thick cut bread and tasty sausages – that are all cooked to perfection. The only downside is the price and portion size. Yes I know, you get what you pay for but at £6.95, for a breakfast without black pudding, hash browns, mushrooms, fried bread etc. oh and no drink, that’s actually quite dear. I added black pudding and a black coffee and it was well over a tenner. Is it worth the money? It’s my favourite place for breakfast in the area and uses well cooked, supreme ingredients, but no, it’s too expensive for a big breakfast.
I must add that it was good to see that they have got rid of the sauce sachets and replaced them with bottles instead.
The cake selection at Ma Bakers is amazing. They have everything from scones through to Oreo cheesecake! I went for the apple pie with custard. The pie itself was delicious – crisp pastry on top of layers of sweet but tart apple! It was let down by the custard though – tasted like it could have been from a packet.
This was my third visit to Ma Baker and after having the full english breakfast on both of my previous trips there, I went for the Bacon, Brie and Cranberry panini this time, which came served with salad garnish and homemade coleslaw.
We didn’t have to wait long for our order to come and absolutely starving, I couldn’t wait to get tucked in!
The first thing I noticed was how much cheese there was in my panini. It simply oozed out of the bread which received a big thumbs up from me because… who doesn’t love cheese!? There was also a large helping of cranberry which added a lovely flavour and depth to the whole meal.
The bacon was cooked to perfection and a little crispy which I love. My only slight gripe was that there could have been a little more of it.
For dessert I went for the banoffee pie. I’m a bit of a banoffee pie connoisseur so I was looking forward to this.
The biscuit base was solid with a really nice crunch but I did feel there was too much cream. If that’s such a thing!? It made it a little sickly and I struggled to finish it.
A delicious meal nevertheless and I’m looking forward to my next visit already!
Just as I am new to the team, I was new to Ma Baker’s.
The first thing I noticed were the gorgeous selection of ice creams and cakes on display as you walk in to the open spaced cafe. When I finally managed to pull my eyes away from the delicious delights on the counter, I noticed the specials board that made my tummy rumble even more!
I eventually settled on a green pesto, mozzarella, chicken and tomato panini. A classic combination I happen to love. When it comes to a good panini I look for well melted cheese, not too much grease, the bread not too be too overdone/hard and no dry chicken. Ma Baker’s delivered on all counts!
It may be one of the best panini’s I’ve ever eaten. Full to the brim, well melted cheese that oozed with the pesto, succulent chicken slices and fresh tomatoes all served with a homemade coleslaw and zingy side salad.
My eyes may have been too big for my belly when I opted to have one of the aforementioned delicious desserts I’d already spotted. I opted for the Banoffee Pie, a safe bet but also a delicious one. I love the combination of banana and toffee so it was always going to be a winner for me. My first lunch club an utter success in my eyes!
I’ll be back to try the afternoon tea for sure!
