For this month’s 87Food Lunch Club, we headed to Montagues in Blackpool!
Montagues is an independent, family-run neighbourhood restaurant and bar, offering a small, considered menu that is cooked from scratch using well-sourced, local ingredients. They’re open everyday for breakfast & lunch, as well as evenings Thursday through to Sunday.
When we arrived, we were greeted with a friendly welcome and were immediately asked where we would like to sit. Once seated, we were given the option of the breakfast or the lunch menu.
Over to you Scott…
I’ve been coming to Montagues for years and it has never failed to disappoint, today was no different.
I love everything about Montagues; the decor, hospitality, ambiance and food. The owners Danielle and Joe are doing things properly. They source all of their produce locally and even have a small garden where they grow seasonal fruit, veg and herbs. It’s a breath of fresh air to the area. There is nothing like it in Blackpool, and if I’m honest, it was a bit of a gamble. Blackpool is famed for holidaymakers who want a quick and easy meal from a recognised establishment. Their gamble has paid off!
Anyway, the food… Their breakfast menu is vast, not too big, but it has something for anyone. I’ve had the traditional breakfast here a few times before, and with Adam ordering it, I decided to try the eggs benedict, instead.
It had a brilliant combination of taste and texture. Soft bread, fresh spinach, perfectly poached runny eggs and a sharp hollandaise sauce that cut through the salty thick cut ham. Delicious!
As soon as we entered Montagues we received a friendly welcome and were shown to our table.
The restaurant has a very relaxed feel and has a unique, stylish decor that is very different from many others in the area… more like a trendy bar you would find in the Northern Quarter of Manchester.
The attention to detail is undeniable, from the homemade shortbread that accompanies all hot drinks, to the eclectic interior design that extends to the funky mis match teapots.
Montagues recently announced that they are Trip Advisors number one place for breakfast in Blackpool and it is no wonder. All of the food served is made from scratch and the chefs are happy to amend any dishes to better suit your needs. The recently updated breakfast menu offers a much more extensive choice and even breakfast cocktails!
I decide to pick my favourite dish, Eggs Royale. A well presented toasted muffin, topped with smashed avocado, smoked salmon, poached eggs and a rich hollandaise sauce. It was delicious, reasonably priced and hard to find any bad points at all… if I had to be super picky, I would say the poached egg could do with being cooked for a couple of seconds longer but everybody has different opinions on this anyway!
If you are a local or visiting Blackpool for the day, this is a must, whether its for Breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a cocktail or coffee.
This was my second visit to Montagues and after having a beef burger last time, I was excited to sample the breakfast menu.
I went for the traditional breakfast which included two rashers of bacon, two sausages, one grilled tomato, beans, one fried egg and a slice of toast. With the presentation spot on, I couldn’t wait to get stuck in…
One thing I struggle to find nowadays is well-cooked bacon. Well… I’ve found it. Not too crispy and not under-cooked, it was perfect, accompanying the two juicy sausages like a treat. The yolk in my egg was runny which meant I could dip my sourdough toast, which always goes down well with me!
An interesting difference that comes with the Montagues breakfast is the beans. Not only do you get normal ones but they are mixed in with kidney beans too! At first I was unsure but it actually worked perfectly, with the kidney beans adding an extra flavour. It was really nice to have something a little different than the norm!
One extremely small gripe I had was with the butter. As it was quite hard, I couldn’t spread it on my toast and I ended up just having chunks of butter.
Everything else more than outweighed that however and it is clear to see why Montagues has been ranked as number one for breakfast in Blackpool on Trip Advisor. Will definitely have it again.
I opted for lunch, as I was craving a chicken burger.
I ordered the cajun chicken burger and a fresh orange juice. My drink came within minutes and was served with a slice of orange to add to the freshness. When my food arrived I was impressed with the presentation. The burger was served on a wooden chopping board, with a bowl of home-made fries. We were then asked if we would like any sauces and I asked for mayonnaise, which was no problem at all.
The chicken was full of flavour, freshly grilled and juicy. The bacon was perfect and the brioche bun was fresh and tasty. The home-made fries were hot and fresh. I couldn’t have had a better lunch.
I would return to Montagues, and recommend it to anybody in the Blackpool area, it is excellent value, very friendly and quality food.
That was our August 87Food Lunch Club but we’d love to visit your restaurant or cafe in September! Give us a call on 01253 462 487.
