You know that coffee place? The one you go to if you can’t find Costa or Starbucks? Yeah that one… Well how do you pronounce it?
Believe us when we say we’ve heard all sorts… “Pret-ah-mahn-gur,” “Pree-ah-mahn-jay”, “Pret-ah-manger” and worst of all… “Pet-a-manager.”
Come on seriously, that last one is awful!
The actual name itself means “ready to eat” in French and was founded by College friends Julian Metcalfe and Sinclair Beecham all the way back in 1986. With both sick of processed food and impersonal service they opened the very first Pret A Manger in 75B Victoria Street, London. It promised simple, delicious food served by friendly, motivated staff.
That’s all well and good but what do you call the frigging place!? We know the suspense is killing you, so here it is…
According to Martin Bates, president of Pret U.S. it is, “Pret-ah-mahn-zhay.”
Or like us, you could just call it Pret…
